United Nations established the International Day for the People of African Descent, which was first commemorated on 31 August 2021. The day aims to promote the extraordinary contributions of the African Diaspora worldwide, eliminate discrimination against people of African descent, and recognize, promote, and protect their rights.

The primary root cause for the African Diaspora was the Transatlantic slave trade, where Africans were transported to Europe and the Americas as enslaved people. As we celebrate this extraordinary day marked by the spirit of Ubuntu, more than 19.5 million Africans live outside the continent. These are huge numbers; their stories, struggles, and triumphs resonate far beyond the geographical boundaries.

Understanding the Significance of Ubuntu

At the heart of International Day for the People of African Descent lies the profound concept of Ubuntu. Ubuntu, a Nguni Bantu term, encapsulates the idea that our humanity is interconnected. It is the belief that our well-being is intrinsically tied to the well-being of others. This beautiful philosophy calls upon us to show empathy, kindness, and compassion to one another, fostering a sense of unity that transcends borders.
